Since our area of South West Scotland is surrounded by many miles of coastline, sea fishing is very popular. There are many opportunities to experience fishing our plentiful waters either by charter boat or from the shores.

There are also many opportunities for loch and river fishing – mainly for salmon and trout.

Leaving Portpatrick Harbour

There are a number of charter businesses which operate from South West Scotland. Links are provided below.

Portpatrick – Loch Ryan Leisure operates out of Portpatrick Harbour. They have, new for 2014, fishing charter boat – Lucky Dip. Full day,half day or evening trips available. Stranraer – Mike Skinner operates his boat Diva from Stranraer Harbour. He can also arrange a complete fishing holiday – 4 nights B&B with 3 days boat charter.

Drummore – On Yer Marks operate three charter boats from Drummore and specialise in Tope, Smooth-hound, and Pollack. Sea angling takes place mainly in Luce Bay and the Irish Sea.

Loch Ryan Sea Angling Association has a wealth of information on a wider area covering the whole of the Rhins of Galloway Coast.

River Fishing

South West Scotland has a number of excellent fishing rivers including the famed Rivers Stinchar and Cree.

Moving eastwards from The Mull of Galloway, we have the Luce, Bladnoch & Tarf, Cree & Minnoch, the Fleet and the River Dee

Heading north, we have the Stinchar which meets the sea at Ballantrae and the Girvan.

Loch Fishing

There are a number of well stocked lochs in our area where you can fish mainly for trout.

Dunskey Estate near Portpatrick has two lochs stocked with Rainbow and Brown Trout.

Near Stranraer there are several opportunities for loch fishing – Soulseat Loch by Castle Kennedy. Diniddie Reservoir, Penwhirn and Knockquhassen are all within a few miles. More information can be found on the Stranaer.org site

A bit further east, here are some ideas for Fishing in the Machars

A few miles to the north of Creetown is Glenquicken Farm which has a 4.5 acre lochan in the shadow of Cairnsmore of Fleet. The lochan is well stocked with rainbow trout from 2lb to the largest ever caught there at just over 24lbs.

In South Ayrshire, Pinbraid Fishery near Ballantrae has a 9 acre loch stocked with rainbow, Brown and Blue Trout. Snacks available. Boat and rod hire
