South West Scotland is home to the famed Galloway Hills which include several Corbetts (Mountains over 2500 feet) Best known mountain, the Merrick is the highest mountain in Scotland south of Ben Lomond and to the north of Blencathra!
There are many options for walking in the Galloway Hills and surrounding area such as Shalloch on Minnoch,Lamachan Hill and Cairnsmore to name but a few.

The Forresty Commission has a number of excellent visitor centres in the area including Glen Trool, Kirroughtree near Newton Stewart and Clatteringshaws near New Galloway.
Newton Stewart which is known as the Gateway to the Galloway Hills holds an annual, week long Walking Festival – this year it is 10th – 16th May (2013) see Newton Stewart Walking Festival 2013 for details.
